West Buttress
The usual approach is via the Kahiltna Glacier. The West Buttress combines heavily crevassed glacier travel with steep snow and ice; its popularity does not make it a hiking route. Plan as a self-sufficient expedition with a team experienced in glacier rescue and prolonged cold-weather camping.

Typical hazards: Crevasses, falls on steep snow or ice, altitude illness, severe cold, wind, and storms that can pin teams in camp.
NPS notes that allowing 21–28 days improves the ability to wait out weather. Neither a summit opportunity nor a timely flight out is assured. Use current route information and expedition planning resources rather than a fixed mileage or elevation-gain estimate.

Planning requirements
Mountaineering registration
NPS generally requires registration at least 60 days before the climb. Review its current exceptions rather than assuming your party qualifies.
- Application and payment
- Follow both steps on the NPS page: pay through Pay.gov and submit the signed Special Use Permit application as instructed. Payment alone does not complete registration.
- Team orientation
- All members must attend the in-person Talkeetna orientation together and bring government-issued photo identification.

- Check NPS for the current mountaineering special-use fee and separate entrance fee or qualifying pass. Review cancellation terms before paying.
- Guided parties
- Use an NPS-authorized guide service and coordinate registration with your operator.
Access
Talkeetna expedition staging
Arrange glacier transport and expedition logistics in advance. Complete the required team orientation at the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station before heading onto the mountain; the park road is not the West Buttress trailhead.
Know before you go
Expedition preparation
Train as a team in roped glacier travel, crevasse rescue, steep snow and ice techniques, navigation, and storm camping before attempting this expedition. NPS strongly discourages solo travel.
Choose clothing, shelter, flotation, climbing gear, and stove systems for sustained extreme cold and wind. Carry enough food and fuel to accommodate delays.
Plan communication and self-rescue with your team. Do not depend on cellular coverage or immediate rescue.
Review the Clean Mountain Can system and current route-specific human-waste rules. Arrange containers and pack-out logistics before departure.
