Typical hazards: Cold temperatures, fog, strong wind, rain, snow, and ice can occur at this high elevation even when conditions are milder at lower elevations.
Official park materials have described the summit walk as approximately 850 feet to 0.25 mile one way. Summitr displays a round-trip range rather than implying greater precision.

Mount Mitchell State Park is reached from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 355.3, then by N.C. 128 to the summit area.
Drive nearly to the summit.
The main summit parking area sits immediately below Mount Mitchell. Day-use parking does not require an entrance fee, but visitors must leave before the park gate closes.

Leave the park before the posted gate closing time unless properly registered for overnight parking or camping.

Check before leaving
As of September 2026, Mount Mitchell is accessible from the Asheville side of the Blue Ridge Parkway only. The Parkway north of the park remains closed for Hurricane Helene reconstruction, with the Mount Mitchell-to-Little Switzerland section targeted for reopening later in 2026. There are no gas stations between Asheville and the park, so check current road status before leaving.
