West Rosebud / Froze-to-Death Plateau / East Ridge
One established approach follows West Rosebud Trail to Mystic Lake, then uses the Phantom Creek trail and Froze-to-Death Plateau to reach the Tempest–Granite saddle and East Ridge. Granite has several major approaches; this is not the only normal climbing itinerary.

Typical hazards: The open plateau is exposed to storms and can be difficult to navigate in poor visibility. Upper climbing involves serious fall exposure and loose rock. The seasonal snow bridge may be steep, icy, broken, or absent; its condition changes the passage.
Published grades and route lines vary. Plan for the climbing and descent your party can protect, including rope and rappel skills where needed. Do not assume existing anchors are sound or that a summer date means dry rock. Water availability on the plateau also needs planning.

Lady of the Lake / Sky Top Basin / Southwest Ramp
An established southern approach starts from Lady of the Lake access near Cooke City via Lulu Pass Road, then continues through Sky Top Basin. It has a different driving approach and a long, rough off-trail component, rather than joining the Froze-to-Death Plateau approach.
Typical hazards: Boulder travel, stream crossings, loose gullies, exposure, and lingering snow or ice remain serious concerns. Do not treat this as a nontechnical substitute for the East Ridge or rely on fixed ropes.
References sometimes use Southwest Ramp and Southwest Couloir inconsistently for different lines. Carry a detailed description and map of your chosen line, confirm the usable trailhead/road endpoint, and plan the descent before committing.

Choose the approach before planning the drive
West Rosebud Trail 19 begins at the end of West Rosebud Road near the power facilities. USFS lists Mystic Lake about three miles up the trail; that is the lake approach distance, not the distance to Granite Peak. Check road and trail status with the Beartooth Ranger District.
Use the West Rosebud trailhead parking; USFS lists a vault toilet. Keep access to power facilities clear. Lady of the Lake uses a separate road system with different parking and road-end choices.
Know before you go
Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness rules
The USFS wilderness regulations limit parties to 15 people and prohibit motorized or mechanized travel.
Keep camps and campfires at least 200 feet from lakes and 100 feet from flowing water, and obey any larger posted closures or current fire restrictions.
Follow the forest food-storage order for food, refuse, and other attractants. Plan compliant storage above treeline, where suitable hanging trees may be absent.

Check before leaving
Check forest access notices and a mountain forecast before leaving. An old route report cannot establish current snow-bridge, rock, or stream conditions. Include weather delays and a retreat plan in a multi-day itinerary.
