Standard route

Southwest Ridge / Chicken Out Ridge

The usual highpointer ascent climbs steeply out of the forest onto the southwest ridge. Above the hiking approach, Chicken Out Ridge requires exposed hands-and-feet scrambling before the upper ridge and summit slopes.

Trailhead

Borah Peak trailhead

Typical hazards: A fall on Chicken Out Ridge can have serious consequences. Snow at the couloir crossing can require mountaineering skills and equipment; its condition changes through the season. Loose rock, difficult downclimbing, altitude, and thunderstorms add to the commitment.

USFS lists 3.5 miles each way; Idaho: A Climbing Guide describes a route under 4.5 miles each way with a revised lower trail. The range reflects that disagreement. Plan a full strenuous day and a safe descent; do not improvise a gully bypass of Chicken Out Ridge.

Access

Borah Peak access road

From US 93 between Mackay and Challis, use the signed Borah Peak access road toward the west side of the range. The Forest Service distinguishes the lower RV area from the upper switchbacks and trailhead turnaround; confirm road conditions for your vehicle.

WaterNo drinking water is provided at the trailhead/camping area. Bring your supply before leaving the highway.

Use the designated trailhead parking and camping areas. Vault toilets are listed by USFS; pack out garbage and check current camping charges and restrictions before staying.

Know before you go

Forest access and preparation

USFS climbing guidance lists no climbing permit requirement. Recheck current forest orders, fire restrictions, and camping information before the trip.

Stay on the established approach and protect the sparse alpine vegetation. Carry out all waste and keep the access road and turnaround clear.

Changes frequently

Calendar dates do not establish that Chicken Out Ridge or its snow crossing is ready for your party. Check the mountain forecast, recent route conditions, and forest access notices; retreat if the scrambling or snow exceeds your skills.
